ORIGIN 
Jackie Robinson was an American baseball player who became the first black to play in the major leagues. He was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. Robinson was the youngest of five children and he was raised by his mother. He grew up in Pasadena, California where he attended John Muir High School followed by Pasadena Junior College. Robinson was 5ft 11in tall. He played several sports including basketball, football, track and baseball. He was named to the All-Southland Junior College baseball team in 1938 and was dubbed the region’s most valuable player.
Robinson attended the University of California, Los Angeles but he was forced to leave due to financial problems. While at UCLA he became the first student to win varsity letters in four different sports. Robinson played baseball briefly with the Honolulu Bears before he was drafted in 1942. He served from 1942-1944 as a second lieutenant in the US Army.
CAREER
Robinson began his professional baseball career in 1945 in the negro leagues. He played 47 games for the Kansas City Monarchs and played in the 1945 Negro League All-Star Game. Robinson made his major league debut on April 15, 1947 for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was the first African American player at the time to compete in the MLB. Robinson was named Rookie of the Year in 1947 and won the National League MVP two years later. He made six consecutive All-Star appearances from 1949-1954. He also helped the Dodgers win the 1955 World Series championship.

Jackie Robinson died on October 24, 1972 at the age of 53. His reported cause of death was heart attack. Robinson was married to ‘Rachel Isum’ from 1946 until his death in 1972. They had three children, Jackie Jr., Sharon and David. Robinson was the first African-American to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. His #42 jersey was retired by the Dodgers in 1972 and by all other teams in 1997.
