City of Lewiston flooding due to reservoir failure

Early this morning at approximately 4 AM, the reservoir for the City of Lewiston located northeast of 16th Avenue (Southway Avenue on Google maps) and 29th Street failed, according to officials. the rupture released approximately three-million gallons of water.

the cause of the rupture is being investigated. The City asks that residents conserve water as much as possible.

Video shot by a Lewiston resident captured the flooding to his apartment units at 2428 11th Avenue.

Pictures posted on social media show more damage to homes downhill from the reservoir.

A boil water advisory order has been issued for residents in the City of Lewiston and will remain in effect until further notice the City of Lewiston will make a post on its official website and social media platforms as well as notify news media when the order is lifted. A water filling station has been set up at the Lewiston Community Center at 1424 Main Street, Lewiston, Idaho. Residents will need to bring their own containers to fill with water the station will be open until 8:00 PM today and will reopen tomorrow Jan. 19 from 7 AM to 8 PM.

The order does not affect residents of the Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District, which has its own reservoir.

Mayor Daniel Johnson issued a Declaration of Local Disaster Emergency this afternoon which is supported by the Nez Perce County Commissioners and is awaiting approval from the State. This would allow the City to ask for assistance from higher levels of government if needed.
