Fire burns Latter-day Saint meetinghouse in Maryland

A Latter-day Saint meetinghouse caught fire in Chevy Chase, Maryland, on Monday, Nov. 20, according to media reports.

Montgomery County, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., firefighters responded to a call of a fire at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Western Avenue in Chevy Chase on Monday at 12:25 p.m.

D.C. firefighters were trapped after a roof collapse but were rescued and are not injured, Montgomery County Division Chief Charles Bailey told NBC Washington.

A video showed a pillar of smoke pouring from the building. The fire is still burning and crews are “making progress but it is going to be awhile,” he said.

No firefighters or civilians have been injured, the chief said.

Bailey said the fire took hold in the attic and continued to burn. “There is going to be significant damage,” Bailey told WTOP News.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue photos show flames coming up through the roof, according to DC News Now.

The Montgomery County Fire Department said a person at the church smelled smoke and called 9-1-1, NBC Washington reported.

Information on the cause of the fire has not yet been released.
