Collins began his football career with the Franklin County Bulldogs. He played various positions including quarterback, receiver, safety and linebacker. He led the Bulldogs to the 2006 Class 3A State championship his junior year. He ran for a total of 2,200 yards as a senior. Collins was also competitive in track and field. He participated in events like discus throwing, shot put, high jump, and the triple jump. He was ranked as a three star athlete by Rivals. Collins played 52 games with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles from 2009 to 2012. He recorded 314 tackles, 21 sacks, 3 interceptions and 3 touchdowns.
